Kunstenfestival 0090: Caner Aslan, vrijdag 09/12, 20:00 Lokaal 01
“In the final scene of the movie Planet of the Apes, Taylor and Nova follow the shoreline and eventually discover the charred remnants of the Statue of Liberty. What Taylor and the audience had thought to be a distant alien planet since the beginning of the movie turns out to be our very planet earth in its future post-apocalyptic condition.
A few years ago, when watching an old family tape that was edited on camera, a collage of banal scenes from various trips to mostly rural areas, one scene stroke my eye. Provoking the same feeling as the Statue of Liberty remnants, an amphitheater stood like an ancient ruin in the middle of the forest.”
Caner Aslan lives and works both in Istanbul and Ankara. His work is based on extensive paper- and image research. Through collage and appropriation techniques he uses material and pictures he finds. Aslan presents them in new relations and contexts and uses various media including film.
As part of a collaboration between 0090, Lokaal 01 and Extra City, Caner Aslan is invited for a residency period at AIR Antwerpen and will present some of his work on the 9th of December in Lokaal 01. During this residency he will be working on a project about the remnants of the village institutes and their current surroundings in rural areas in Turkey. The village institutes was an experimental educational program initiated in the 1940’s, intending to turn children into teachers who would take knowledge back to their hometowns. The project was discontinued after a few years and most of the facilities were abandoned. It was one of the most utopic plans the new republic initiated at that time.
