?1978 (Dendermonde), lives and works in Brussels
"The work of J¸rgen Ots is about the image and how this image is participating in everyday life. He gets his influence from the life he's living and translates them in abstract, tortured images where the tormented material works as a metaphor for marginal emotions, dynamics, relations and situations. The work of J¸rgen Ots is dark, but human and vivid. The installations always go their own way and visitors have all sorts of personal interpretations attached to them. "The anonymous passage series" are different for everybody. The installation is standing there as some kind of religious icon. Simple but grotesque in his action. A minimum of input and a maximum of interpretation.
J¸rgen Ots uses his media in a non-conformist and anti-traditional way. His actions underline the character of the material and show them in another situation. This works alienated in the space and it has an intriguing effect. People want to touch it, it's sensitive to a physical action. It provokes physical attraction. The artist' process is one of experiment. Through experimenting and trying different possibilities the work invents almost itself."
Alan Quireyns.
J¸rgen Ots studied at Sint-Lucas Brussels. He had several residencies, for instace at Rijksacademie Amsterdam, Iceland, CitÈ des Arts Parijs, Kulturbunker Frankfurt, EEA in Berlin and the Atlantic centre for the Arts in Florida.
