Hemant Sareen

May 2018 to Jun 2018
1967 woont en werkt in New Delhi

Hemant Sareen is invited for a residency of two months to participate in the LODGERS#14: ARIA. Artist, teacher and researcher Nico Dockx selected three artistic research PhD projects at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Geert Goiris, Mashid Mohadjerin and Vijai Patchineelam offer a fascinating insight into (part of) their research processes. In all three doctoral projects, the relationship between reality and perception on the one hand, and fiction and imagination on the other, plays an important role.

New Delhi-based artist Hemant Sareen uses photography to critically engage with his immediate environment. What emerges is a representation steeped in intimacy and empathy of places, people and animals around him. The camera becomes a tool of self-reflexivity of the artist’s condition. Larger, impersonal themes – environment, man-animal binary, displacement, etc. – are scaled down and intensified as personal epiphanies.

During the residency he will depart form the Antwerp Zoo, one of the oldest city zoo’s in the world. Hemant wants to explore the Antwerp Zoo and other related institutions to look at colonial history. Hemant Sareen collaborated closely with Vijai Patchineelam on his publication: Sambi Shiva: The Photographs of Sambasiva Rao Patchineelam. On May 3, at 7pm he participates in the collective reading organized at LODGERS, 6th floor, M HKA.

Hemant Sareen participated in the following exhibitions (a selection): Suburbia Indica: A house is not a home, Punctum Asia, 2011; Glitch, Frame, Lollipop, Latitude, 2012, New Delhi, 2012; Zoopoetics: A new subject for the next revolution, New Delhi, 2013; House Exhibition, New Delhi, 2013; Yeh Wo Manzil to Nahn?
