Joris De Rycke

Nov 2014 to Feb 2015
1990 Schilde. Lives and works in Antwerp

Joris De Rycke and French artist Simon Feydieu are selected for a residency of four months in AIR Antwerpen and Artistes en Résidence Clermont-Ferrand. The Résidence Croisée is a residency model in which two months (one in every residency) are spent together.

The practice of Joris De Rycke includes various media like drawing, a radio show with fellow artist Gerard Herman, photography, music performance and graphic design. His projects depart from the materials he gathers during ‘pointless’ walks and bike tours, without a real arrival, but where the search for an interesting spot takes over. During these walks Joris De Rycke keeps lists of the animals and plants he encounters, takes photographs, remembers certain forms in the landscape returning afterwards in his drawings, gathers objects and records sounds here and there. This collection can lead to a new work, but forms also an inspiring compost layer in his atelier.

Joris De Rycke studied graphic design at the Royal Academy in Ghent. His work was shown in the following exhibitions (a selection): Dit is al, bleek, Sint-Niklaas, 2014; MAGMA, Antwerp, 2014; Ruderalia, duo-show with Diane Rabreau, AIR Antwerpen, 2014; Iets in de struiken gooien wanneer zich daar iets onduidelijks in beweegt, het Paviljoen, Gent, 2014; All you need is in danger, 2013; Tomorrow or today, Mexico Project Space, Leeds, 2013; overweldigend gewelddadig, Zwarte Zaal, Gent, 2013; Joris De Rycke, zicht met deurklink, wallpiece 18, 2012.
