Tom Castinel

Nov 2017 to Feb 2018
1984 lives and works in Lyon

Tom Castinel is invited for a residency of four months in AIR Antwerpen and Artistes-en-Résidence Clermont-Ferrand, as part of the annual Résidence-Croissée exchange project, together with Line Boogaerts.

Tom Castinel is a one-man-band whose performances, installations, video and graphic works are messages of commitment to life. He sets out to highlight the primary, daily actions of creation and the enjoyment they bring. He puts a contemporary spin on assemblage and collage, with a strong influence from musical techniques such as sampling and mixing - suggesting a direct, tactile relationship with objects. All his actions are based around dissipation, in every sense of the word: energy consumed and lost, agitation and prodigality. It is all about occupying and pushing the boundaries of space in a radical way, but also simply being there - sensing an immediate, bodily presence in the world. Tom Castinel’s works are ‘choral dances’, full of movement and musicality.

Tom Castinel was invited for the following solo exhibitions (a selection): La vallée dérangeante, Valence, 2017; Pâle Mâle, Le 19, CRAC Montbélliard, 2016; Tanzwut, Galerie der Stadt Tuttlingen, 2016; Pâle Mâle, Kunsthalle Göppingen, 2016; Er Läutete - She romps, CAP Saint-Fons, 2014; Gesticulation, Sunset Résidence, Lyon, 2012. His works were also shown in the following group exhibitions: Pretexte #4, Festival Actoral 17, Friche Belle de Mai, Marseille, 2017; 62ieme Salon de Montrouge, 2017; Danse Danse Danse, Villa Paloma, Monaco, 2016; D’autres possible, Pavillon Vendôme, Clichy, 2016; Pour vous mieux contempler, demeurez au desert, Cité des Arts, Paris, 2015; Voice-off, Lecture, Galerie Provisoire, Villa Arson, Nice, 2014.
